Idle machines pause themselves
After 15 quiet minutes the machine stops. Your disk and files stay as they were.
A GPU you forgot to stop costs the same as one that is working. Now a machine with nothing going on pauses itself after 15 minutes, and everything on it stays.
A render finishes at night, the pod keeps running, and the morning starts with a bill for eight hours of an idle GPU.
A Hinode machine watches for that itself. When nothing has happened on it for 15 minutes, it pauses. Its disk stays, with everything you installed, and resuming takes a couple of minutes.

Turn things on and off. Anything that is really working keeps the machine awake.
If you are using it, it stays on. Any of these keeps a machine awake:
- input on the desktop
- the GPU doing something
- data leaving the machine
- any process you started still running, including one you left in
tmuxover SSH - an app you opened in your own browser with
hinode open
A quiet job is still work. A training run that is downloading a dataset with the GPU at zero will not be paused under you. An SSH shell sitting at a prompt, with nothing running in it, does not keep a GPU awake.
What a pause keeps
Pausing stops the hourly charge. The disk stays, and so does everything on it: your apps, your environment, the files in your home folder. The shared folder is not on the machine at all. Resume it from the app, the command line or your assistant.
If a machine is not pausing when you expect it to, look for something still running: a stuck script, or a session you never closed.
The same rule for the workspace
The workspace follows the same rule, so a whole account left alone for a weekend ends up paused, with only disks and the shared folder on the bill.
